Case Study Overview

This History Mystery is a multimedia educational resources designed to introduce students to a number of areas of the curriculum that they can study in their history courses at Years 6, 8 and 9. It can also be used at lower primary levels with teacher discretion. Topics include:

  • Black Death in the 14th century, and in an English plague village in 1666
  • Spanish Conquest of the Americas in the first half of the 1500s
  • Smallpox disaster in Sydney 1789
  • Plague in Sydney 1900
  • Influenza pandemic in Australia 1919

Format
This unit of study is presented as a website which includes interactive elements, videos, PDF and worksheets (in Word Doc format). The unit is compatible with computers and iPads.

The website comprises the following resources:

  • Teachers’ Notes
    The Teachers’ Notes set out a series of steps as an approach to using this resource in the classroom. The suggested approach may be done as a whole-class activity or with small groups tackling different activities and reporting their findings back to the class.
  • Video
    What can we learn from plagues in history?
    The video incorporates an introduction to each of the topics above, designed to identify the key aspects of each, and to engage students’ interest in it.
  • Student Online Activities
    There is also a set of introductory activities to help students understand and focus on the key concepts involved in their study, to start developing hypotheses about it, and a template page that students complete to help summarise their findings.
