Youth Challenge 2007

Should Australia go nuclear?

That's a very important current issue.

Here's a way that a study of the past can help us become informed decison-makers about that question, while developing good history skills.

In the 1950s Australia became only the fourth nation in the world on which an atomic bomb was exploded.

  • Why did Australia set up an atomic weapons testing range at Maralinga in the 1950s?
  • Were the local Aboriginal people protected?
  • Were the participants in the test protected?
  • Did we develop our own bomb?
  • Were we going to develop nuclear power?

The 2007 Youth Challenge addresses these questions - but it also involves students from dozens of schools in workshops where they have to be decision-makers, and then present their conclusions as role play scenes.
There is plenty of expert input, but the aim is to see how informed students tackle these questions from the past that live with us still.

And from the day students will be able to go into their own local communities, explore history mysteries there, and file a report - and maybe win fabulous iPod, iPod Nano and iShuffle prizes on offer.
