Ghost town
Ghost Town - A model for Independent Inquiry Learning
Ghost Town is a fun decision-maker that incorporates some of the key principles of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and equivalent standards in other states and territories. High on the list of these standards is the ability to engage in Independent Inquiry Learning, a process that involves students in ‘finding out by working out’.
Ghost Town effectively models the steps involved in inquiry learning and provides a framework (including a series of activity sheets) that will help guide students to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Learning and practising research skills e.g. identifying a topic for investigation; understanding the context; forming questions; developing hypotheses or best guesses; gathering and critically analysing evidence; reviewing hypotheses in the light of new evidence; coming to conclusions and presenting findings in a variety of ways.
- Identifying, sequencing and listing on a reproducible worksheet the steps required to complete an inquiry research project
- Using a proforma/framework sheet to plan independent research projects in history, geography or perhaps investigating an aspect of their own community
- Learning how to independently evaluate their own research project by identifying what has been achieved and what still needs to be done.
